selenak : Sisterhood, a Doctor Who vid featuring female companions of seasons past who did more than scream and twist their ankles.
I didn't like the end of the most recent season very much, because Martha's exit was a bit... yeah. I mean, good on her for walking away and all given the storyline she got, but there's something about the whole thing that leaves an icky taste in my mouth. Is this what companions get to do, now? Fall hopelessly in love with the Doctor, moon around after him for ages, and then get stranded in a parallel universe, or fall hopelessly in love with the Doctor, moon around after him for ages, and then walk away? I don't really think it's fair to talk New Who companions up as some kind of improvement on the more useless ones of days gone by when you're inflicting the emotional equivalent of ankle-twisting on their storylines. And my childhood companion was Ace, so I'm not going to buy any lines about how weak and helpless they all were before Rose, either.
Also, I was expecting something to be made out of the constant missing-Rose references other than, er, that he misses Rose, because while that's all fair and good and reasonable, it is getting to the point where he's constantly talking about Rose because Rose Was Just The Best Companion Ever, and, um. He doesn't miss Ace? He doesn't miss Susan? This seems odd.
But, anyway. What I was going to say was, speaking of Doctor Who vids, here's one featuring the first companion I knew. New Who people, meet Ace, probably the best counter-argument ever to claims that Old Who companions never did anything: Trouble.

Date: 2007-07-19 04:01 pm (UTC)I agree completely, and have gone to some great lengths in my head to explain this situation... still without complete success. A fic seems to be brewing on this subject, so hopefully the actual writing process will make things more clear. :P
My impression of the end of the season was that we've probably seen the last of the woebegone "I miss my Rose!" Doctor - I like to think of last season as his grieving process. With any luck (especially now we know who it is...) the next companion will Very Much Not Fall In Love With Him. I think we're all sick to death of that trope. Time for something new, and hopefully Davies & Co. are aware of that.

Date: 2007-07-20 06:46 pm (UTC)Oh God yes. If they head that way with the next one, I will start screaming. (There's a rumour that the reason that got worked into Martha's plot was to explain why she'd put up with sticking around for everything, which if it's true, argh.)
I thought last Christmas worked great as a rebound companion who was very much Not Rose, and all the grieving worked fine there, but then they seemed to - I dunno, decide there wasn't enough of it? Sigh. I quite liked Rose, but sheesh.
