Writing this postdoc proposal is driving me crazy, crazy, I tell you. And it is making my brain want to write fanfic instead, very much indeed. Most of the fanfic ideas I get when I'm trying to do something else are stupid ones that only seem appealing because of the procrastination value, but there's this one I've been swatting around in my head for a while now that I think might be kind of fun.

All right, so. Babylon 5 people out there: would any of you read Minbari worker-caste fic? Not a story just about OCs, but one about how the main characters/conflicts of the main story arcs look to someone(s) in that particular outside position, as narrated by an OC? (An OFC, I'm afraid, but she is totally not a Mary Sue because I don't have sparkling emerald green eyes and magic powers and I am not secretly the daughter of Dukhat and she is so we are like two totally separate people! I kid, I kid. I have her provisionally sketched out already and she's fairly cool, but she is an OFC in a central role, and I know that puts people off.) Think a four-five part equivalent of A View from the Gallery, only not fawningly cringingly awful and with a hefty load of Minbari-focused world-building.

And! Also! People who might be interested in that, do you think there's any possibility for Delenn-Neroon interaction, on the station itself, other than what we saw on screen? This wouldn't usually be challenging, but the scenes they do have together are surprisingly few and don't seem to leave much space for any other interaction that's not of galactic import. And I could do with them having at least the odd conversation, because I want Neroon in this fic sometimes too, but due to my OFC's place in things that won't work unless he's around Delenn. So: might they have spoken occasionally, on whatever grounds? Is it feasible that they'd have met at some point between Legacies and Neroon getting elected/appointed/whatever-they-do to the Grey Council, say? Or after the Grey Council was disbanded? Any scenario would do, as long as it put Neroon on the station without a major station-on-lockdown! event. In short: can I write in a couple of those, or would that come across as stretching canon for the purposes of getting characters I like in the fic? What do you think?

Look! My fic-writing brain is not entirely rusty! Mostly rusty, yes, but it looks like some parts still turn.

Title: Deceptions
Setting: During S1, 'Legacies'
Characters: Delenn, Lennier, Neroon.
Rating: PG for bodysnatching.

Ficathon fic

For [livejournal.com profile] alicamel, for the Babylon 5 Rare Pairings Ficathon (and apologies again for the delay). The prompt was Zack/Byron, pre-series, angsty, without fluff, and perhaps with something about Zack’s backstory, and this got way longer than I’d planned it to but, well, just you try pulling off Zack/Byron in 750 words.

Title: Nostalgia Couldn't Take Care Of Its Own
Pairing: Zack/Byron, pre-series. (Admit it, you’re curious.)
Rating: R-ish, for sex, drugs and bureaucracy.
Spoilers: For Byron’s S5 episodes.
Disclaimer: All belongs to the Great Maker, and none belongs to me. Byron's line about ambition is from an Alexander Pope poem.

Some fanfic

Because it's far too hot to get any work done, I've spent the past few days re-reading about half an Internet worth of bookmarked fanfic. It reminded me that I still had these lying around unfinished from something I was trying a while ago. So, with some final dusting to get them up to shape: four fandoms, four ficlets, all beginning with the same line. Anna Sheridan, Simon and River Tam, Leia Organa, and, er, BSG weirdness. (I don't think anything here would be rated above PG.)

Z Minus (Babylon 5) )

Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere (Firefly) )

The End Of The World Was Long Ago (BSG) )

In Memoriam (Star Wars) )

Today, one of the university porters told me I shouldn't be working on a Sunday. Not in a jokey "tsk! you students, working all hours!" way, either; there was serious disapproval there. And a stern look. All of it lost on me at the time, since I was distracted and on a five-minute processing delay with reality, but definitely there. (He was at work on a Sunday, but not in uniform and therefore presumably not on duty.)

I'm not quite sure what to think about this. Pissed off with him for (presumably?) assuming anything about my religious practice, or that he had the right to dictate it, yes, but also, I'm curious. Scotland does have a sizeable church (the Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland) that takes a very strict line on keeping the Sabbath holy; they're mostly in the north, where Mr. Third Commandment's accent came from, and so I'm guessing he belongs to them. On the other hand, while their reputation for disapproving of work on Sundays is pretty well-founded - protesting Sunday ferry travel between the islands, chaining up swings in playgrounds - I've never heard of any attempts to extend that to the rest of Scotland, on an individual or collective level. Puzzling.

On other matters, a fandom meme from [livejournal.com profile] selenak:

Six shows you like (which I'm expanding to include films, because otherwise I'd be listing the things I watch semi-frequently now, and that would be the kind of daytime TV that resulted in none of you ever speaking to me again):

1. NYPD Blue
2. Star Wars
3. (New) Battlestar Galactica
4. Babylon 5
5. BtVS/Angel
6. Firefly

And the questions )
I was going to ask someone else to pick one, but this fic has been digging claws into my head since I wrote it. So, here you go.

The story is ‘Valen’s Children’, which is here and here (two parts).

Cut for commentary and self-indulgence )

B5 fic

As promised, with a BSG ficlet still to come.

Title: Missing
Rating: Um. PG?
Spoilers: up to and including Objects at Rest (S5).

Thesis chapter written (in draft form, anyway) and sent away to supervisor. (And apparently I can't pull off all-nighters any more, and collapse on the keyboard at around 3am. Hm. That's annoying.) I'll have to wait a few weeks to find out what my supervisor thinks of it, but it's possible that for the first time ever I'm actually on schedule with the PhD. This feels weird.

My brain was reluctant to get out of writing mode, so behold: three short ficlets, all about ink. (With apologies in advance for any grave and terrible canon mistakes, since my in-depth knowledge of Star Wars has evaporated long ago, leaving me with nothing but a couple of planet names and a vague feeling that I've got some kind of major issue with the New Jedi Order books.)

Conferences organised: zero one.

Living off caffeine and panic for a weekend still couldn't keep me from falling asleep the second I got home, so now it's way past midnight and I'm wide awake. I'll post about the conference itself once it's stopped feeling like a very bizarre figment of my imagination; for now, [livejournal.com profile] deborah_judge's fictional-characters-at-academic-conferences meme looks like a fun way to calm down )

As promised:

Lennier, religious angst, and gratuitous Easter imagery. Really gratuitous Easter imagery.

Also, cheating a bit on the word count. )

Short fic

Monday, 28 March 2005 10:53
Young Lennier story which I have owed [livejournal.com profile] kakodaimon for about sixteen years, or something close to that. But it's here and finished now, mostly thanks to an otherwise boring train journey and a notebook I forgot I was carrying. See what you think.

Archaeology )
In between trying to prepare a tutorial for a group who won't have done the reading (essays are due in this week) and don't much like poetry anyway, and working out what the weird clicking noise is in the kitchen.

Tales of War, 2 )
So, um, there was a fic I was working on ages ago that was an AU for Atonement and afterwards, which got put on indefinite hold after the first few chapters last year. Sorry to anyone who was reading it. It wasn't actually forgotten, but every time I tried to write the next chapter it wouldn't work; when I came back to it a couple of weeks ago, I changed the premise a little bit to see what would happen, and now it seems to be going okay. Well, see what you think. Still draft-ish for now.

Rating currently somewhere around PG, no specific warnings, Delenn, Sheridan, Lennier and Atonement stuff. (Chapter 2 done and will be posted later today/tomorrow.)

I just sighed loud enough for my housemate to come downstairs and ask what was the matter. This would be less troubling if I could remember sighing at all.

On a not-unconnected note: the Psi-Corps books say that Morden has a PhD. This makes a lot of sense without requiring dead-family explanations on why he'd be working for the Shadows in the first place: he's got a good job, he's well-paid, all his superiors listen to him and he's doing something that everyone agrees is important. I bet he gets an office to himself, too.

Tired. Grumpy. Fed up of reading about connections between Victorian Christianity and spiritualism (which is really interesting when I'm in any kind of better mood, but not right now). So the following rant or rave or whatever it is has small chance of being coherent, or interesting, or even worth reading.

With apologies, [livejournal.com profile] kakodaimon:
