Work: Is great, in most ways. New job is rewarding and doing something important and actually out of the house 75% of the time. It is a bit more of a Kobayashi Maru situation than I was ideally hoping for - "we need a solution to this problem which is both good and cheap and fast!", hmmm - and the subject matter can get a bit upsetting sometimes, so I'm even more glad of being able to take it out of the house and come away from it when I'm off work.

Writing: It is all Tolkien, all the time. I am lost. Rings of Power has reawoken the Balrog of my latent Tolkien fannishness and I can remember all of it now and ohhhhhh I've missed this. I am also really, really pleased to have rediscovered writing fanfic as stress relief and am amazed by how much I can get written on my phone on the train. I am carving out a really nice happy-place writing niche for myself writing Galadriel and/or Sauron Rings of Power woven into wider Tolkien canon and I am having so much fun with it. Latest:

So Wide a Sea: 5500 words, explicit/mature (kind of borderline), Galadriel in s1 Rings of Power era then after LOTR, Galadriel/Sauron and Galadriel/Celeborn but mostly Galadriel, really.

Shadow-Bride: ongoing WIP, currently 50k words and 8/15 chapters. Galadriel/Sauron which lol I never thought I would be writing and is now this huge pairing, all hail the ff.net girlies who saw the light in 2003.

Also I have a fandom Twitter account now! all welcome come say hi. It is a wild and crazy world out there and the other week I got accused by some 'Tolkien purists' (pffft you kids know NOTHING) of being a paid-for Amazon promoter. lollllllll. Amazon if you're out there: I will come work for you if you give me a job that is as interesting as mine, less stressful than mine, and comes with an extra few seasons of The Expanse please please please.

Reading: more Tolkien. Currently on umpteenth Lord of the Rings reread, after... about fifteen years I think. But so SLOWLY, I have so little free uninterrupted time and much of it is spent manically writing fanfic. I am also reading Amy Liptrot's The Outrun, a memoir of addiction and life on Orkney.

Watching: not so much because ditto. I saw the first episode of s3 Picard and I quite liked it (but then I've always liked how previous Picard seasons started, just went off them as they went on); I saw the first episode of Wednesday which was fun but hasn't made me desperate to watch more; and I've started watching Lockwood & Co which is very young-adult-y but in the best way. Oh! And I finally saw Wakanda Forever when it came out on streaming, and LOVED it.

I have had SUCH AN ANNOYING couple of weeks at work, where we are a) trying to organise a big event while b) going through a hugely unsettling big structural shakeup that c) means everyone's worried about their jobs while d) we are also missing a lot of staff and e) aren't allowed to hire anyone until b) is sorted out. It's now at vaguely comedic levels. On top of this, both kids have been ill, and on top of that my mother-in-law is moving house and needs oh so much help with that.

On a related note, I have been part way through writing a [community profile] trickortreatex recs post for ages - a fic exchange with a lot of spooky stories - and STILL HAVEN'T FINISHED, not least because I have still hardly read any of the ones I wanted to read due to ^ that. So most of that is still to come, but since we are now at the author reveals point already here are the two written for me, which I did get around to reading!

Moments of Transition, Moments of Revelation by [personal profile] cahn (Babylon 5, Delenn/Neroon, T) - is an absolutely wonderful, long, plotty, AU where Sheridan stays dead at Z'Ha'Dum and it's Delenn and Neroon with an arranged marriage to preserve political stability.

Superposition by kanadka (Babylon 5, Branmer, T) - a pivotal moment in Branmer's life, which is both complex worldbuilding backstory and also Branmer backstory specifically, and fits like an absolute jigsaw piece into canon without being the shape I would have expected at all.

(These two also make a wonderful set of the two things I always felt were missing in B5 fandom when I was really active in it about 15 years ago, which were Delenn/Neroon stories (I mean! that chemistry!) and anything about Branmer. And I am so so so pleased to see things like this being written now!)

And the ones I wrote:

Haunted in small ways (Babylon 5, G), for kalirush - Vir, Lennier, and a station full of ghosts.

Some say the world will end in fire (Babylon 5, M) for [personal profile] cahn - Delenn/Neroon, Warrior Caste festivals and political scheming.

And things that go bump in the night (Ghosts, G) for Small_Hobbit - how do you run a haunted house event in an actual haunted house?

A few weeks ago [personal profile] selenak mentioned in her Babylon 5 rewatch that it would be great to read an AU where in season 4 ). And I thought, AH-HA I sort of wrote that! Except I didn't really write it as a whole story, so much as write bits and pieces of stories set in a similar AU, in which instead of season 4 ) I couldn't quite make it work as a whole coherent universe but it was really good fun to write bits and pieces from as a sort of fanfic scratch-pad when I was stuck in writing other things.

Aaaaaaanyway, I have dusted some of that out and polished it up a bit. Here's a Delenn/Neroon section from what was going to be a list of Minbari marriage rituals:

you think I would be so petty as to jeopardise this peace because I don't like it. )

Yeah yeah yeah. It has been a while. I've really needed some fun distraction this week, so here we go.

There was a meme going round a while ago, to write a short short fic for every standard fic genre you could think of in the same fandom - like, 'in a sentence' or 'in 10 words'. I went for 'in a 100-word drabble', which seemed a bit more doable for those of us who tend towards 300-word sentences in the first place.

So, here are six of them. More following another time, maybe. Warnings for mild/implied sex and violence, nothing super-graphic.

AU: Valen is a prisoner. (outside canon but spoilery for early S2) )

First time: romance and flowers and heartfelt speeches. (S3/4) )

Hurt/comfort: another injured warrior. (S3 after 'Grey 17 Is Missing' )

Comedy: that's nothing new. (S1 after 'Legacies') )

UST: she wishes he wouldn't ask. (S2/3/4) )

Angst: Pesky things, prophecies. (S2) )

[personal profile] kangeiko wrote the gorgeously wonderful story resolve me of all ambiguities for me in the ninebillion ficathon, on the subject of what Milo Rambaldi is to Jack Bristow. I suggest you read it when you've got quite a few moments free, because if you're anything like me you're going to go straight back to the beginning and read the whole thing through again at least three times...

BSG fic

My story for the [profile] ninebillion ficathon - 'The Kindly Ones' (BSG 2003, written for [personal profile] anonymous_sibyl) - is up here, if anyone's interested. Laura Roslin and a Cylon, spoilers up to late S3.

And whether BSG's your thing or not, it's worth heading over to the community anyway now that the exchange fics are appearing. There are some gorgeous, beautiful stories on there from all sorts of fandoms. Go! Read!

Look! My fic-writing brain is not entirely rusty! Mostly rusty, yes, but it looks like some parts still turn.

Title: Deceptions
Setting: During S1, 'Legacies'
Characters: Delenn, Lennier, Neroon.
Rating: PG for bodysnatching.

My fic-writing brain is all rusty these days.

Sydney, set late in Season 4 with spoilers right up until then (and I'm only up to the point where SPOILER ) so it's definitely set no later than that. No spoilers for later, please, kind people). PG-13 for spy-related professional hazards. 792 words.

In a world like hers, you never assume anybody's dead unless you can risk them getting up again. )

For [livejournal.com profile] alicamel, for the Babylon 5 Rare Pairings Ficathon (and apologies again for the delay). The prompt was Zack/Byron, pre-series, angsty, without fluff, and perhaps with something about Zack’s backstory, and this got way longer than I’d planned it to but, well, just you try pulling off Zack/Byron in 750 words.

Title: Nostalgia Couldn't Take Care Of Its Own
Pairing: Zack/Byron, pre-series. (Admit it, you’re curious.)
Rating: R-ish, for sex, drugs and bureaucracy.
Spoilers: For Byron’s S5 episodes.
Disclaimer: All belongs to the Great Maker, and none belongs to me. Byron's line about ambition is from an Alexander Pope poem.

Fic rec: Not With A Bang, by [livejournal.com profile] rivendellrose. Marcus and Lennier (and others), and it's just beautiful. Go read!

(oh, and no Season 5 spoilers, as she's only up to the end of S4.)

Some fanfic

Because it's far too hot to get any work done, I've spent the past few days re-reading about half an Internet worth of bookmarked fanfic. It reminded me that I still had these lying around unfinished from something I was trying a while ago. So, with some final dusting to get them up to shape: four fandoms, four ficlets, all beginning with the same line. Anna Sheridan, Simon and River Tam, Leia Organa, and, er, BSG weirdness. (I don't think anything here would be rated above PG.)

Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere (Firefly) )

Kakodaimon asked questions... )

eta: And I forgot the second part of the meme. If anyone wants me to ask them five questions, leave a comment below.
eye_of_a_cat: (Default)
Technically, cheating, since the rules for the meme say comment-and-request. The reason is this particular fic. It came out mostly the way I wanted it to, and I’m happy enough with the writing; it’s also got a whole lot of ideas that I’d really wanted to get into a fic somehow. So I should be pleased with it. Except there’s something about it on some level that bothers me more than anything else I’ve written.

The fic is ‘Valen’s Children’, which is here and here (two parts).

Cut for commentary and self-indulgence )

Better late than never, yes?

Part 1 is here, part 2 is here. No warnings here, just a bunch of conversations. (With thanks to [livejournal.com profile] deborah_judge for suggesting Minbari rituals many months ago.)

Lennier, religious angst, and gratuitous Easter imagery. Really gratuitous Easter imagery.

Also, cheating a bit on the word count. )

Short fic

Young Lennier story which I have owed [livejournal.com profile] kakodaimon for about sixteen years, or something close to that. But it's here and finished now, mostly thanks to an otherwise boring train journey and a notebook I forgot I was carrying. See what you think.

So, um, there was a fic I was working on ages ago that was an AU for Atonement and afterwards, which got put on indefinite hold after the first few chapters last year. Sorry to anyone who was reading it. It wasn't actually forgotten, but every time I tried to write the next chapter it wouldn't work; when I came back to it a couple of weeks ago, I changed the premise a little bit to see what would happen, and now it seems to be going okay. Well, see what you think. Still draft-ish for now.

Rating currently somewhere around PG, no specific warnings, Delenn, Sheridan, Lennier and Atonement stuff. (Chapter 2 done and will be posted later today/tomorrow.)
