Trick or Treat
Nov. 7th, 2022 08:52 pmI have had SUCH AN ANNOYING couple of weeks at work, where we are a) trying to organise a big event while b) going through a hugely unsettling big structural shakeup that c) means everyone's worried about their jobs while d) we are also missing a lot of staff and e) aren't allowed to hire anyone until b) is sorted out. It's now at vaguely comedic levels. On top of this, both kids have been ill, and on top of that my mother-in-law is moving house and needs oh so much help with that.

trickortreatex recs post for ages - a fic exchange with a lot of spooky stories - and STILL HAVEN'T FINISHED, not least because I have still hardly read any of the ones I wanted to read due to ^ that. So most of that is still to come, but since we are now at the author reveals point already here are the two written for me, which I did get around to reading!

cahn (Babylon 5, Delenn/Neroon, T) - is an absolutely wonderful, long, plotty, AU where Sheridan stays dead at Z'Ha'Dum and it's Delenn and Neroon with an arranged marriage to preserve political stability.
Superposition by kanadka (Babylon 5, Branmer, T) - a pivotal moment in Branmer's life, which is both complex worldbuilding backstory and also Branmer backstory specifically, and fits like an absolute jigsaw piece into canon without being the shape I would have expected at all.
(These two also make a wonderful set of the two things I always felt were missing in B5 fandom when I was really active in it about 15 years ago, which were Delenn/Neroon stories (I mean! that chemistry!) and anything about Branmer. And I am so so so pleased to see things like this being written now!)
And the ones I wrote:
Haunted in small ways (Babylon 5, G), for kalirush - Vir, Lennier, and a station full of ghosts.
Some say the world will end in fire (Babylon 5, M) forcahn - Delenn/Neroon, Warrior Caste festivals and political scheming.
And things that go bump in the night (Ghosts, G) for Small_Hobbit - how do you run a haunted house event in an actual haunted house?

Sep. 8th, 2022 04:56 pmA few weeks ago selenak mentioned in her Babylon 5 rewatch that it would be great to read an AU where ( in season 4 ). And I thought, AH-HA I sort of wrote that! Except I didn't really write it as a whole story, so much as write bits and pieces of stories set in a similar AU, in which ( instead of season 4 ) I couldn't quite make it work as a whole coherent universe but it was really good fun to write bits and pieces from as a sort of fanfic scratch-pad when I was stuck in writing other things.
Aaaaaaanyway, I have dusted some of that out and polished it up a bit. Here's a Delenn/Neroon section from what was going to be a list of Minbari marriage rituals:

There was a meme going round a while ago, to write a short short fic for every standard fic genre you could think of in the same fandom - like, 'in a sentence' or 'in 10 words'. I went for 'in a 100-word drabble', which seemed a bit more doable for those of us who tend towards 300-word sentences in the first place.
So, here are six of them. More following another time, maybe. Warnings for mild/implied sex and violence, nothing super-graphic.
( AU: Valen is a prisoner. (outside canon but spoilery for early S2) )
( First time: romance and flowers and heartfelt speeches. (S3/4) )
( Hurt/comfort: another injured warrior. (S3 after 'Grey 17 Is Missing' )
( Comedy: that's nothing new. (S1 after 'Legacies') )
( UST: she wishes he wouldn't ask. (S2/3/4) )
( Angst: Pesky things, prophecies. (S2) )

It reminded me that I still had these lying around unfinished from something I was trying a while ago. So, with some final dusting to get them up to shape: four fandoms, four ficlets, all beginning with the same line. Anna Sheridan, Simon and River Tam, Leia Organa, and, er, BSG weirdness. Dec. 1st, 2005 01:42 amTechnically, cheating, since the rules for the meme say comment-and-request. The reason is this particular fic. It came out mostly the way I wanted it to, and I’m happy enough with the writing; it’s also got a whole lot of ideas that I’d really wanted to get into a fic somehow. So I should be pleased with it. Except there’s something about it on some level that bothers me more than anything else I’ve written.

Ask me what happens after the end of any of my stories, and I'll tell you. Or guess. Or, well, something.
So you're cleaning all the pollen off your TV screen and a genie pops out. In return for freeing her, she offers to grant you 5 changes to any TV show(s) you wish. With only 5 wishes, what do you wish for?
I've got pretty good at rationalising away pretty much anything, but if there's a genie right there...
1) Make Chris Carter go back in time and actually have a plan for The X-Files. I don't even care what the plan involves, I'd just like there to be one.
2) Take Lennier's diary out of Objects at Rest. Actually, if this genie has really powerful associates: I'm okay with Lennier's betrayal being left as it is, since Something Big was clearly going to happen and I'm just glad it didn't involve his death, but change the eventual consequences to something involving reconciliation and forgiveness and happy endings for everyone involved as far as is possible.
3) A more believable take on Delenn's role in the war in In the Beginning, or at least some more of an indication that she was not the lone powerless voice speaking against the war that she so badly wants to remember herself as. Also, it would have been nice if we'd got to see Branmer a couple of times.
4) Uncancel Space: Above and Beyond.
5) Make whatever they did with Cordelia in Angel be some kind of bizarre hallucination everyone had for a very long time.

B5 meta stuff
Apr. 24th, 2005 04:57 pmI was wondering what I'd answer for that character types meme, and ended up thinking Delenn would appear on the list of types I liked and the list of types I didn't (in canon and fanon incarnations respectively). And this seems like a long way to drift, especially for a main character who gets a lot of screen time, but there's really a huge difference - canon Delenn is one of my favourite characters, but fanon Delenn is probably my most disliked part of the B5 universe, Lennier's diary included.

Mar. 13th, 2005 06:33 pmSo, um, there was a fic I was working on ages ago that was an AU for Atonement and afterwards, which got put on indefinite hold after the first few chapters last year. Sorry to anyone who was reading it. It wasn't actually forgotten, but every time I tried to write the next chapter it wouldn't work; when I came back to it a couple of weeks ago, I changed the premise a little bit to see what would happen, and now it seems to be going okay. Well, see what you think. Still draft-ish for now.
Rating currently somewhere around PG, no specific warnings, Delenn, Sheridan, Lennier and Atonement stuff. (Chapter 2 done and will be posted later today/tomorrow.)
