I agree completely, and have gone to some great lengths in my head to explain this situation... still without complete success. A fic seems to be brewing on this subject, so hopefully the actual writing process will make things more clear. :P
My impression of the end of the season was that we've probably seen the last of the woebegone "I miss my Rose!" Doctor - I like to think of last season as his grieving process. With any luck (especially now we know who it is...) the next companion will Very Much Not Fall In Love With Him. I think we're all sick to death of that trope. Time for something new, and hopefully Davies & Co. are aware of that.
