Ambiguous. Although, here's something I thought of but couldn't find a way to work in from Lennier's POV: maybe the true face depends as much on the person watching as it does on the one being watched, and that in return for the implied position of trust in watching someone sleep, you're supposed to let yourself see (for a moment) whether your views of them are fair/accurate. Not that this would comfort Lennier much, here.
