Ugh.

Hospital visit the other day after panicky emergency scare type thing re: pregnancy. All is fine, though; the little thing has a heartbeat and a tail, both of which are pretty cool.

Meanwhile, the morning sickness has reached whole new levels of misery, to the point where I can hardly eat anything without vomiting. So that's fun. I have another doctor's appointment on Monday, where they can either give me drugs or I'll chain myself to the door, and in the meantime I'm lying down trying to drink a glass of milk very, very slowly. FUN TIMES.

::hugs:: Please be sure you are taking your vitamins! As one friend's OB described it, the human baby is "the most efficient parasite the world ever created" - "those prenatal vitamins are not for the baby. they're to keep you alive - the baby will suck all your nutrients, so you need to supplement!" (Her hubby was out of town that week, so I took her to her appointment. This was the friend who had a miscarriage then had massive morning sickness when she got pregnant again...) According to this doctor, you can grind them up and sip them in water if that's the only way to get them in and keep them down.

I have enough trouble with nausea from some multivitamins without grinding them up first! I think it tends to be B vitamins combined with the other vits that make multis all stinky, and it can help to take the Bs separately. Also don't assume that capsules are less likely to cause nausea than tablets. Tablets may be a bit fragrant when you're swallowing them, but they dissolve slowly in your stomach, whereas capsules are absorbed quite quickly.

Glad all is OK, relatively speaking. And let us know how the appt goes - I really hope you don't have to resort to chaining yourself to the furniture in order to get them to help you. You need fuel for this process! That should not be so hard for them to understand!

Be well. Get the drugs. Rest. Relax. It gets better. (and then worse, says the mama at 37 weeks in a heat wave.)

I asked on the POTS forum, as POTS causes bad nausea and it was worth picking their brains. Too much to copy in now, I'll tell you over the weekend, but two meds that were mentioned as being safe for use in pregnancy were Zofran and Phenergan. So that's a start for meds research. I've not been on Zofran, and since I'm on heart meds I won't be, but I've been on Phenergan, it's an antihistamine and possibly an OTC one.

Yep, I can confirm that Phenergan is OTC (we gave it to my daughter for motion sickness).

Hey hon, hope you're feeling better tonight. Here are some of the suggestions that were posted on the POTS forum, with my notes in square brackets:

* After my son had foot surgery, he was nauseous in recovery. One of the nurses opened an alcohol wipe and had him breath in slowly through his nose holding the alcohol wipe by his nose. It worked. You can use a cotton ball and soak in rubbing alcohol. Not sure if it works with morning sickness. [Not that I've ever worked out what "rubbing alcohol" is, mind you.]

* I read somewhere about chewing on fennel seeds but not sure about the flavor. [There are a few plants in this family which could be options. Aniseedy sorts of things. Do you like those sugar-coated fennel seeds they often have sitting around in Indian restaurants?]

* Acupuncture. [You can get medical acupuncture these days, done by doctors based on physiology rather than woo, but while it's meant to be good for pain, I haven't the foggiest idea if it helps nausea.]

* um I read a blogger lady who had terrible nausea during pregnancy who sniffed fresh lemon wedges and ate sugary breakfast cereal constantly- it was all that helped her! [They really want you sniffing stuff, don't they?]

* Drinking root beer alleviated my nausea.

* When I was pregnant 7 up, not the diet kind, used to help me - it was best if I left it to go pretty flat and drank it at room temperature. Rich tea biscuits nice and plain "to put a lining on your stomach" as my Mum would say. [Do I detect an actual Brit here?]

* Try sucking lollypops.. yeah it sounds silly but it helps . Try not to get too hot (easier said than done in this weather) When feeling really nauseous try not to move around so much.. staying still can sometimes help things settle down. Ice pops are good too! Ice cream not so good.. And just try remembering that it does pass.. and you will get waves of nausea worse than others but getting worked up about it will only make it worse!!

* I've also seen that changes in blood sugar make nausea worse... so if she ate small bits every hour and avoided large meals that might help! [And the last time you managed a large meal is...?]

They can be a very helpful bunch. I have a 24 hour blood pressure monitor happening tomorrow and they have suddenly been silent on that, naturally, just when I could do with some advice!

Hope there's something useful in there, and if not, well, what the hell, it's not as bad as when people corner you in person and start reeling off stuff you've already tried.
