I set my alarm for 7.05 when I'm writing. This is not because I'll ever get anything done at 7.05, but because writing does something to my head that makes me believe I can, despite a) knowing I've been up until 1.30 writing anyway (see! see! I work! I do!), and b) knowing that I haven't been able to Do Mornings since I was eight.

To prove that my brain is not in a thinking stage at 7.05, here is what I did this morning:

- Woke up
- Got up, tripped over dog, went downstairs
- Got pair of socks out of dryer
- Went back upstairs
- Put socks under pillow
- Went back to sleep.

I do not know why.

People, don't set your alarm for 7.05. It makes you believe in the Sock Fairy.

You are so cool. I liked this post.

That makes up for the reaction I got from my housemate when she asked why I'd got up so early this morning. Oh, the power of the slightly raised eyebrow and barely-concealed snigger...

There is a sock fairy! There is! It's where all the missing socks go!

Oh, wow. That's lovely - I definitely needed that laugh, even if it meant trying to answer my office phone while stifling a giggle.

Maybe I should try the sock thing, too. I wonder if maybe it would magically send me back to my college days when I could get away with just going back to sleep at 7:05?

I believe in the power of the Sock Fairy. Sacrifice a small amount of laundry per day, and time travel should be no problem!

(When I was revising for my GCSEs (exams at age 15/16), I used to sleep with notebooks under my pillow - officially so that if I woke up and couldn't get back to sleep I could revise, and unofficially so that the knowledge would seep out of the books and into my head while I slept. I think it worked, too.)

I don't know about the time travel, but it seems the laundry sacrifices happen whether we want them to or not... does it count as a 'sacrifice' if they just disappear? Ah, the deep ethics of washing-machine portals....

(Hee! I usually do that unintentionally - just kind of conk out for a while with the book under my face. But doing it intentionally's not a bad idea at all!)

No sock fairy? You've shattered my childhood! *emo*
