"You're not a true Star Wars fan until you hate *all* the films"

I am no longer the last person in the universe who hasn't seen Revenge of the Sith! Possibly I'm among the privileged few who've witnessed Edinburgh's new sport of People In Public Places Hitting Each Other With Big Foam Sticks, too. All in all, a very productive day.

I've been reading lots of reviews on LJ and elsewhere, and from what I've gathered: a) most people liked it more than they thought they would, except for the really hardcore crowd complaining Star Wars isn't as good as it was when they were twelve ("Why can't George Lucas still write good dialogue, like the scenes with Han and Leia?"), b) there is a reason for why General Grievous appeared to be a droid with TB, and c) American cinema audiences are really, really noisy. I loved it, so I'm putting any grumbling by other people down to the distracting influence of an audience that can't sit still and be quiet for two and a half hours.

In brief:

* What did Padme die of? I can see why Lucas didn't go for Anakin killing her directly, since this way made Palpatine look even more evil, but - dying of grief, and that quickly? I'll just believe Palpatine killed her, I think.

* Did that 'the Sith can create life' scene mean that Palpatine created Anakin in the first place, then?

* That giant lizard was amazing. I don't care if it's a CGI gimmick designed with the toy merchandise market in mind. It was amazing.

* Anakin killing Dooku was a nice future echo of Anakin killing Obi-Wan. Killing your opponent once he's stopped fighting you was the Sith way after all, then...

* It still feels weird to hear Ewan McGregor with an English accent. Self-respecting Jedi masters don't come from central Scotland.

* Obviously, Padme visited Leia after her death in the same way that Obi-Wan visited Luke, and that's how come she can remember her. Obviously.

* That padawan almost managing to break through to Bail Organa was heartbreaking. I really wasn't expecting the murdered children - the most detail I'd heard about the film beforehand was "it's dark like Empire", but Empire is dark in a "well, things look gloomy, but it'll all work out in the next film" sort of way, whereas this was an "it'll work out okay-ish one day, but right now ninety per cent of everyone you've seen is dead" sort of way.

* speaking of which, I don't think Anakin's turn to the dark side was too sudden or unexplained - once he'd done enough bad things, he had to believe Palpatine was right and therefore everything he'd done was worthwhile. And the sheer hate in his voice during his last scene with Obi-Wan was just right.

Really? Damn, I'm gonna have to put something other than Jedi Knight as my religion on the next census.
