My latest tarantula encounter was on a evening drive to a group camping trip (I had had to work late). Driving up around 2400-2500 m (~8000 FT), I saw something that looked like it was moving like a crab across the road. I slowed down and it was a very large tarantula. I would expect to see them much further south at lower elevations, and I'm still at a loss as to why it was there.
